MANILA -The 10 close contacts of the first monkeypox case in the country exhibited no symptoms related to the infection until the end of their required quarantine period.
In a media briefing Tuesday, Department of Health (DOH) Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said "the quarantine period of all the close contacts ended today, Aug. 16".
On July 29, the DOH reported the first monkeypox case -- a 31-year-old Filipino who arrived from overseas on July 19.
The agency is yet to report a new case of monkeypox.
"Tomorrow po, they will be checked by our physicians, para ma-i-clear sila at ma-dismiss na sila (They will be checked by our physicians tomorrow, so they can be cleared and dismissed) from quarantine already," Vergeire said.
The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern.
Earlier, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared public health emergency over America because it is one of the countries with the most number of monkeypox cases.
Monkeypox is spread through close or intimate contact with infected individuals. (PNA)
