Caritas Manila sends over P9-M cash aid to typhoon-hit dioceses

MANILA - The social action arm of the Archdiocese of Manila has sent more than PHP9 million in cash assistance to dioceses that were affected by Typhoon Odette.

Based on the latest data as of Thursday, Caritas Manila said it has provided PHP2 million to the Diocese of Surigao through Fr. John Young, president of Father Saturnino Urios University of Butuan City.

The Dioceses of Tagbilaran, Maasin, Talibon, and Kabankalan, as well as the Archdiocese of Cebu and the Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay, Palawan, each received PHP1 million while the Archdiocese of Cagayan De Oro received PHP500,000.

Meanwhile, the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa and the Diocese of Dumaguete have received PHP400,000 each.

Puerto Princesa Bishop Socrates Mesiona said they continue to distribute food packs but these are not enough for the needs of those most affected by the storm.

"Today, we have already distributed food packs but because our resources are limited so we can't give them all," he said in an interview with Radio Veritas.

Meanwhile, Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortes said more than 70 people have been killed while 22 are missing in Dumaguete City.

He added that apart from food and water, the victims also need first aid kits and tarpaulins that can shelter refugees.

"They need medical kits and tarpaulins because especially in the northern parishes that have had a storm surge," the Catholic prelate said.

On the other hand, the bishops expressed gratitude to Caritas Manila executive director Father Anton CT. Pascual, for its continued extension of support especially to those most affected by the recent calamity. (PNA)
