BANTON, Romblon, Okt 9 (PIA) -- Ginunita sa bayan ng Banton, Romblon noong Oktubre 4 ang Linggo ng Katandaang Pilipino, alinsunod sa Proclamation No. 470 na isinabatas noong termino ng dating Presidente ng Pilipinas na si Fidel V. Ramos.
Ang pagdiriwang na may temang 'Health and Productive Aging Starts with Me' ay sinimulan sa isang parada paikot sa Barangay Poblacion na dinaluhan ng aabot sa mahigit 600 senior citizen mula sa 17 na barangay ng bayan.
Sa panayam ng Philippine Information Agency - Romblon kay Dawn Fadri, pangulo ng pederasyon ng mga Senior Citizen (SC) ng bayan, sinabi nito na mahalaga para sa mga SC ng bayan ang mga ganitong gawain dahil madalang na nagkakasama-sama ang mga senior sa kanilang lugar.
Batay sa datos ng kanilang opisina, may mahigit 1,000 ang senior citizen sa kanilang bayan at ang pinakamatanda na dumalo sa pagdiriwang ng Linggo ng Katandaang Pilipino ay edad 92 taong gulang.
Sa maikling programa sa bayan, ipinaalala ni Fadri ang mga karapatan ng mga senior citizen katulad ng mga diskwento kapag namimili ng kanilang mga pangunahing pangangailangan katulad ng mga gamot.
Inihayag naman ng 69 taong gulang na si Morilla Mejico na ang pagkahilig ng mga residente ng bayan ng Banton sa gulay ang sikreto kung bakit mahaba ang buhay ng mga residente sa lugar.
"Mahilig talaga kami sa gulay, hindi kami masyado kumakain ng karne. Kasi karamihan sa amin sa bukid, ang aming mga itinatanim pag namunga na pipitasin at lulutin na," pahayag ni Mejico. (PJF/PIA-Mimaropa/Romblon)
