Soldier, two rebels killed in Philippines

A soldier and two New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed in a clash in Canlaon City in the central Philippine province of Negros Oriental, a military spokesman reported Sunday.

Soldiers from the 11th Infantry Battalion were on a security operation when they were attacked by an undetermined number of NPA insurgents near Barangay Bucalan in Canlaon around 7.30 a.m. Saturday, said Maj. Enrico Gil Ileto, spokesman of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, Xinhua reported.

The brief fighting resulted in the death of a soldier and two rebels, who were members of a section in the NPA which specialises in assassinations, the spokesman said.

The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, was formed March 29, 1969. Latest military estimates placed the NPA's strength at more than 4,000.
